Our Christian faith teaches that the beginning and ending of physical and spiritual life rests with God. Our Memorial Prayer Garden and Columbarium was established to serve as a final resting place for the cremated remains of our loved ones and a special, quiet place to prayerfully reflect on and remember what they meant to us and others.
The word Columbarium comes from the Latin word “columbary” which is a structure for the nesting of doves, the dove often being described in scripture as the symbol of God’s spirit and peace. A Columbarium is a structure made up of many recessed niches (sealed compartments) that hold cremated remains that are housed in urns.
The Memorial Prayer Garden and Columbarium is available for personal spiritual retreat, prayer, meditation, and communion with God. With prior approval and reservation it may be used for special services such as weddings and memorials. The Columbarium niches are available for Christian interment of human cremains of individuals in the surrounding community; 50% of the niche space shall be reserved for members of Portland First United Methodist Church and their extended families. Pavers, landscaping, and selected structures are available for memorials.
